Judo lessons for the Sydney Swans
UNSW Judo coach and former Olympian Warren Rosser has been contracted to coach the Sydney Swans. Warren will give the Swans' ruckmen and defenders specialised coaching on using their bodies to out-position their opponents on the field.
"Judo gives athletes greater awareness of their balance under pressure and increases one's ability to dominate their position," said Warren.
Judo is offered at UNSW for participants of all abilities and ages from three years and up. Contact Warren on 0415 625 168 for more information on UNSW Judo's program.
UNSW Killer Whales create history
Water Polo history was created at the State Under 20's Water Polo Championships when the UNSW Killer Whales ended Cronulla's 12 year dominance in the State under 20's Championships to win 8-7 in the Grand Final.
In a thrilling display of Water Polo the young Killer Whales dominated the game from the onset against an opposition that boasted six current Australian Under 20's representatives.
The highlight for the team was the ability to nullify Cronulla's powerful counter attack and defend each of Cronulla's surges to get back into the game. Control and precision in attack was a highlight with the team making the most out of opportunities from the perimeter.
Leading the attack for the Killer Whales were Annabelle Carter, three goals; Michelle Kearney, two goals; Holly Lincoln-Smith, one goal; Kaatya Armstrong, one goal and Elyse Jackson, one goal. Lea Barta was inspirational in thwarting numerous Cronulla goal chances. It was a fantastic 'team' effort in which every player played a vital role over the weekend.
Preliminary results were as follows:-
vs NSW Country - won 11-1
vs St George - won 5-3
vs Cronulla - lost 7-4
vs SNB - won 7-1
vs Syd Uni 5-2
vs Balmain 5-2
Further individual success came after the game with Holly Lincoln-Smith being named tournament MVP. Annabelle Carter, Kaatya Armstrong, Elyse Jackson and Holly are named in the State Under 20's squad.
The full team is as follows:- Lea Barta, Naomi Brooks, Kaatya Armstrong, Holly Lincoln-Smith, Annabelle Carter, Michelle Kearney, Kara Mirabito, Sarah Grunberger, Elyse Jackson, Chloe Ta'Avale, Julia Burford, Courtney Finlay and Kate Moran.
This is the first Under 20's State title for the UNSW Killer Whales and is a sign of how well the club's High Performance Program is going and it is great result for the UNSW Water Polo Club.
