Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

No! However more ash trays should be provided in the areas where smokers congregate as I find butts more offensive than the smoke. Time wasted by leaving the campus to smoke is not necessary, will not solve the problem, & will congest & pollute UNSW entrances/exits.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Of course smoking should be banned on campus.

Secondary smoke kills lots of people including my wife.

But people, who are addicts of nicotine, try to find logic to continue using something that will shorten their lives and give all manner of health problems. Many will die miserable deaths.

There is nothing glamorous about smoking.

Additionally, commercial interests on campus are afraid of losing trade from people at bars etc. if smoking is banned but they are playing with people's lives. The same young people who claim to care about the environemnt etc. do nothing for their health or their friends.

Public meeting here on S-E Sydney transport

I believe I am correct in thinking that now UNSW is the only university in Sydney without a train station?

There was someone in Psychology who campaigned about this for many years: rail, light rail, anything!

According to notices he used to send around, there has been a rail link around through bondi/Coogee, to Kingsford/Kensington and back to Redfern planned for many years. There is a platform at Redfern station behind walls and there was or used to be corridor land owned by State Rail for the track.

I don't know how much influence this meeting will have: the bloke in Psychology said that the plans for the line through what is now UNSW are over a century old!

Perhaps the grandchildren of today's students might enjoy it?

Characteristic of the poor public transport is that I cannot attend the entire meeting: I must leave before 8pm as that is when the last 370 bus departs for where I live. I only use public transport to and from UNSW.

Should be an interesting meeting.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Yes, we had a family friend who died from cancer due to prolong second-hand smoking.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Exactly right! Existing restrictions are sufficient.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Smoking isn't illegal just yet; I totally support smoking areas, but I don't support an overall ban - you will just force staff to leave campus and crowd on the footpaths and thus be away from their desks longer.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

I'm not a smoker, but neither am I an anti-smoking Nazi. I think existing restrictions on smoking on campus are sufficient.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

No.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Yes, 100%. I heard on the radio a few months back that a University in Adelaide was pushing for a smoke free Uni. It's an excellent idea!

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

YES, YES, YES, YES, YES!!!

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Yes I'd love a smoke free campus! Many students and staff still hang around entrances and often in groups having a smoke, oblivious to the discomfort this causes to others....the policy has not gone far enough or not been publicised/enforced.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Yes, UNSW campus(es) should definitely be smoke free. We need to set an example, as we do with many other issues.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

yes - campus should be smoking free area. this would set a good example for a healthy workplace for both staff and students.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

I would love the campus to be smoke-free. I hate it when I see people smoking in the walkways and anywhere, really.

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Yes, campus should be smoke-free. However, how do we police this? Massive on the spot fines perhaps?! Also, how do we avoid ending up like the hospitals up the road which have a permanent crop of smokers loitering on the street out the front dumping thousands of butts?

Re: Should our campus be smoke free?

Definitely around all eating areas but not necessarily in areas where it doesn't impact on other staff.

Re: Smoking ban on UNSW campus

Yes! Staff are encouraged to contribute to news@unsw. Have Your Say was introduced specifically to provide a space for staff to begin conversations about issues concerning the UNSW community.

Many areas of the campus are currently smoke-free, as outlined in the current policy which will be reviewed before the end of the year.

Does the policy need to go further or has it gone far enough?

Smoking ban on UNSW campus

Hi, I'm interested in getting some debate going around making UNSW a smoke free campus. What forums are available to get something like this started. Is a staff member able to contribute to News@UNSW or any other UNSW publications?

Re: Swine Flu

UNSW has a Pandemic Response Plan that defines and co-ordinates the response, recovery and restoration procedures to be undertaken in response to each pandemic alert stage issued by the Australian Government. It aligns with the 2005 NSW Health Interim Influenza Pandemic Action Plan.

The University's Emergency Planning Committe met last week and is continuing to meet to ensure that we are ready to implement the Plan if and when necessary.

Swine flu

The email shows that the university has a Pandemic Response Plan. It seems that along with other emergency response plans staff and students don't know about it or where to find it. It seems that the plan will only be activated AFTER someone tests positive to the flu. This would then make all the people that the person has come into contact with on the potentially affected list. Which could be many. This then makes it a reactive plan, not a proactive plan. This does not make sense as a Risk Assessment Plan.

The news of Dean Mike Archer's departure is so unexpected ....

If you have a few free moments, here are a few lines of my thoughts on this outstanding person.

Staff bus

Thankyou for the morning staff bus. It saves me about 20 minutes of commuting (down from nearly 2 hours!) and I don't feel as exhausted when I arrive at work. What a relief!

IT & Maintenance Blues

I am a new staff member here and my transition into UNSW work life has been slowed by poor IT and maintenance. It took over two weeks to get a staff email set up. I know it was Easter, but that was quite an extended period of time for a job that should really only take a day. In addition to the email debacle, it also took just under two weeks to fix my phone. It was quite frustrating!

Is this normal? Are any other staff experiencing such problems?

Posted by: on 3/4/2009

Thanks for the staff express bus.

Another issue is Parking, many staff paid for their display ticket however due to the overcrowding when session starts, many times we can't find a permit holder's spot. What is University's approach and plan to this problem? Some new building like Lowy Cancer does not have parking, how did the building get approved by UNSW and Council? Yet we also offer free parking to Conjoints, which we think is a good gesture. The issue is priority, how do you police the parking? It's counter productivity if staff gets stressed driving around to find a spot or has to go out every one or two hours to move the car.

I am sick and tired of paying for a yearly travelpass and watching other staff and students que jump at Central and enter the line for bus entry and get on a bus without using a valid ticket

Posted by: on 3/4/2009

1. 892 stop at Central station can also be used to send passengers to Campus.

2. High Street is over crowed. Try alternate route. Buses delayed here cannot go back on time for next delivery.

3. Allow staff to work before 8:00 am also help.
