Appointments

Professor Steve Sherwood from Yale University and Dr Lisa Alexander from Monash University will join UNSW’s Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC).

Together they bring a greater focus on the Earth's atmosphere to complement the Centre's existing strengths in ocean and land-based studies of climate change.

"We're delighted with Lisa and Steve's appointments to our team," says CCRC co-director Professor Matthew England. "They bring a tremendous reputation and capacity to our University in the atmospheric sciences."

Steve researches how processes in the atmosphere conspire to establish climate. In a recent review article he co-authored in the journal Science, he confirmed that the evidence is now indisputable that water vapour released into the atmosphere adds one degree Celsius to global warming for every degree contributed by humanity through greenhouse gas emissions.

Lisa has played a key role as a contributing author to the influential Third and Fourth reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and has been selected by the Federal Government for its expert group working on scoping studies for the next IPCC report.

Paul Bransdon has been appointed Director of the Risk Management Unit.

Paul joined UNSW as a Workers Compensation Claims Officer in 1994 after working in the insurance industry for 15 years. He became the Manager of Workers Compensation and Rehabilitation in 1997 and continued in this role when the Risk Management Unit was established in 2000. In 2006, Paul was appointed to the position of Manager of OHS and Workers Compensation within HR.

Drawing on Paul’s experience, the Workers Compensation Unit will be incorporated into the Risk Management Unit and the business continuity function will also be merged into this portfolio in the future.

Elizabeth Humphrys has recently been appointed to the position of Student Conduct and Appeals Officer in the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Students) and Registrar.

Elizabeth's role includes the administration and implementation of the student complaint procedures and the investigation of allegations of student academic and non-academic misconduct.

Elizabeth worked for the NSW Ombudsman for the last seven years, where her role included handling complaints about the 10 NSW public universities. Elizabeth has investigated complaints about a wide range of government agencies and local councils, and she was involved in developing the Ombudsman's guidelines for dealing with unreasonable complainant conduct. Elizabeth worked previously as an Education and Welfare Advisor for the student associations of the University of Sydney and the University of Western Sydney.

Margaret Hudson has been appointed as Director Advancement Services, UNSW Foundation.

Margaret has a strong background in the education and events industries. As General Manager Business Relations with the APEC Australia Taskforce she was responsible for organisation of the Business Summit, sponsorship and business engagement.

She has also held senior positions with IDP Education Australia and the Australian Tourist Commission (now known as Tourism Australia). She recently completed a contract role with UNSW International.

Margaret is an alumni of UNSW having completed an Executive MBA at the Australian Graduate School of Management.

Achievements

Professor Martin Green has won the 2009 ENI Renewable and Non-Conventional Energy Award for his research on solar power. He was presented with the award and a 200,000 euro research grant at La Scala in Milan last month. He is now on an ENI sponsored lecture tour visiting universities in Pisa, Milan and Turin.

The annual ENI Award, officially launched in July 2007, aims to encourage better use of energy sources and promote environmental research.

Martin has been an inaugural Australian Federation Fellow and Scientia Professor at UNSW since 1999. He is also Executive Director of Research at the ARC Photovoltaic Centre of Excellence at the University.

Tigger's Place Childcare Centre has been identified as a consistent provider of high quality long day care and is one of six centres in NSW to be selected to participate in a case study investigation. The study aims to explore the structural and process elements that promote and sustain high quality in long day care. The project is funded by the Australian Research Council and is being undertaken by Macquarie University and Charles Sturt University.
