Invitation to participate in a survey on open access to research

UNSW Ethics approval number: 06623

Mary Anne Kennan is a graduate research student in the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management, Faculty of Commerce and Economics. She is conducting research on the scholarly/research communication process and as a part of her research is looking into open access.

Open access is a topic of growing importance. The purpose of this project is to contribute to better understanding of the area for universities, research funders, publishers and scholars themselves.

You are invited to participate in a survey on open access to academic, research and scholarly publications. Even if you believe you know little about the field your response will be useful.

Open access enables free and immediate access to academics and scholars, via the Internet, to work such as reports of research and research based theoretical or creative works in journal articles, conference papers, and other similar formats. There are two major ways to provide open access to scholarly work:

  • by self-archiving (i.e. depositing) in institutional or disciplinary/subject repositories copies of work also published in traditional journals, conference proceedings and so on; or
  • by redirecting publications from traditional journals and conferences into open access journals and conferences

To understand open access, it is important to understand other aspects of the scholarly communication process, especially disciplinary differences, so there are also questions on this later in the survey with room at the end for any of your comments or observations.
